“Caring for your new tattoo starts before you walk in the door.”
Ensuring that each client’s tattoo heals to perfection is my utmost priority. Each service I offer has some additional pre-care guidelines and a customized aftercare regimen. I go into more detail on the corresponding page under the “Services” menu above.
There are, however, some best practices that apply to any service I perform. I recommend you familiarize yourself with them before your first appointment. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly via email or instagram!
Pre-care
Clients must have discontinued use of isotretinoin (Accutane) at least one year prior to a scheduled tattoo session. If the area to be tattooed has any blemishes on the day of a session, it will need to be rescheduled.
Starting four weeks prior to your appointment, discontinue any chemical peels, dermabrasion products, mesotherapy, and other aggressive treatments that might damage the skin’s surface. Contact me with any questions about specific products or therapies.
Beginning 2 weeks prior to your appointment, please avoid the following:
Facial cosmetics and products that include Vitamin A, Retinol, Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, and Salicylic Acid, as well as any treatments marketed as “exfoliating”, “skin regenerating”, or “anti-aging”.
Botox or dermal fillers in the area to be tattooed.
Direct sunlight or tanning beds. If you plan to be in the sun, always use sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30.
While it’s always a good idea to stay hydrated, now’s the time to really focus on your water intake. Well-hydrated skin retains ink better, becomes less irritated, and heals more cleanly than dry skin. I recommend a water bottle with measurement marks to encourage hydration throughout your day!
If you have a history of cold sores or fever blisters, please begin taking prescription antiviral medication no less than 72 hours prior to treatment, and continue taking them for at least 72 hours post-treatment. Contact your physician to arrange this.
As an optional step, I recommend taking supplemental lysine for 72 hours prior to treatment. Lysine is an amino acid that boosts immunity and aids in the healing process. It can be found anywhere vitamins are sold. As always, please consult with a qualified healthcare provider before taking any new supplements or medications.
In the 24 hours leading up to your session, please avoid or eliminate the following: alcohol and caffeine; Vitamin B-3 (Niacin), Vitamin E, and fish oil; aspirin, ibuprofen and blood thinners.
Time for your session!
If you didn’t already provide your photo ID during your consultation, please remember to bring it today so we don’t have to reschedule.
After your session
If you started an antiviral regimen to treat recurrent cold sores or fever blisters, you can discontinue their use after 72 hours with physician approval.
During the first week of healing, it’s very important to avoid heavy exercise, steam, heat, and other activities that cause profuse sweating. You should also stay out of direct sunlight during this time, and moving forward be sure to apply and reapply sunscreen on the treatment area whenever you’re out in the sun. This will protect the ink from being damaged by the sun’s ultraviolet light.
After two weeks, you can return to activities such as swimming pools, hot tubs, massages, facials, and skin treatments. You can also use a tanning bed at this time, but always use plenty of sunscreen over the treatment area. For a tanning bed I recommend no less than SPF 50.
After four weeks, you may resume use of exfoliants, retinol and retinoic acid, glycolic acid, and alpha-hydroxy acids. Use them sparingly, as aggressive skincare products can cause premature fading and uneven color.
